Screenplays Still!

Hard to believe it has been a year since I've posted to my blog! And what a busy year it has been. My screenplay, Zak Goes Back to School, made the Top 25 in the Phoenix Film Festival Screenplay Competition. I just finished revising my second screenplay, Retro Geeks, in time to enter the Kids First! Film Festival Screenplay Competition. (Wish me success!) Next up - Winslow, Arizona, which I'd like to enter in the Phoenix Film Festival this year. The script still needs LOTS of work but my birthday trip to Winslow inspired me to fininsh the project. (Yes - I actually stood on the corner in Winslow, Arizona! And there was even a flatbed Ford there, too!) I now have a list of five more screenplay ideas - at the rate at which I finish scripts, I should have those completed by 2015!

Screenwriting

Well, folks, for the rest of 2008, I have decided to devote all of my so-called "free" time to screenwriting. I just completed a first draft of the comedy, Zak Goes Back to School and I am working on a second draft of my adaptation of my novel, Hey Dorothy You're Not in Kansas Anymore. I will also be adapting my novel, Where is Wonderland Anyway and I have ideas for four additional scripts! I better get writing and stop worring about updating my blog! I will tell you that the more I learn about screenwriting, the less I realize I know about screenwriting!

Arizona Play Production

Great news! My play, God's Grace, was selected by a juried panel for a staged reading at the Arizona Women's Theatre Company 2007 Pandora Festival - Secrets Revealed. The sold out production took place on May 20 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Those They Left Behind: Interviews, Stories, Essays and Poems by Survivors of Suicide is finally published! The book was a year in the making and well worth the hard work. I hope the book helps many survivors of suicide realize they are not alone. The book will be available soon at Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com. The book has been published using a profit-free publishing model in order to keep costs down and any profits made from the sale of the book will be donated to organizations that assist survivors of suicide.

Transformational Stories will encompass an expanded mission of facilitating the telling of personal stories through narrative, drama and film. I am so happy to announce that Certain Expectations was named a finalist in the Theatre Publicus Prize for Dramatic Literature 2005 Contest!

And equally exciting...a partial reading of the play, under the direction of Megan Mascorro-Jackson, McNair Scholar at Kansas State University, featuring participants in the conference as readers, took place at the 9th Annual MKN McNair Heartland Research Conference held September 23-25, 2005, in Kansas City, Missouri.

I hope the enthusiastic energy for Certain Expectations keeps building!!!!

New Project - Those They Left Behind

Several weeks ago, I felt an overwhelming urge - one outside of my own personal desire - to write a book about the experiences of people who were impacted by a loved one's suicide. Now I'm off and running with this project...

Those They Left Behind will be a collection of personal stories from survivors of suicide. I have already had some terrific response to my call for personal stories and interview volunteers but I can certainly use more!

If you've had a close friend or loved one complete suicide and feel you were impacted by his or her death, please consider volunteering to be interviewed, or contributing your story, to this new book intended to help survivors of suicide in coping with their loved one's death.

First Steps First

Over the next several weeks, I will be contacting McNair Scholars Programs throughout the country and telling them about Certain Expectations. I'm hoping that some of them may have an interest in having their McNair Scholars produce the play - or maybe they will help spread the word about the play at their institutions!
